vitreous glass mosaic
18’ x 18’ x 13’ (425 sq ft)
Genome Center of the University of Wisconsin Biotechnology, Madison, Wisconsin 2004

As pointed out by one of the scientists, the only common denominator among the researchers at the Genome Center is the incredible rapid growth of knowledge in the field. Their processes of observing, analyzing, mapping and deciphering informed the choice of simple, shared imagery – cell division, mitosis and meiosis.

The overall scheme was laid out in mosaic, and later divided into 4 tile wide strips. Like DNA, the arrangement of the strips gives the illusion of pulling apart and reordering as happens in palindromes. Much of the resulting new images were not evident in the original design.
